Dopo aver rilasciato un paio di anni fa il debutto“Back”, gli spagnoli The Val sono tornati sul mercato col loro nuovo album “Heading For The Surface”, delicato intreccio AOR/Pop Rock, migliorato in termini di songwriting, arrangiamenti e produzione.
Il sound di questa seconda release risulta più compatto, grazie soprattutto al lavoro alla chitarra diAlfonso Samos (anche produttore), alla precisione della sezione ritmica e all’interpretazione vocale diGabrielle De Val, sempre angelica e cristallina, ma più profonda che mai, per un risultato finale che trae ispirazione dai lavori di band come Romeo’s Daughter e di artisti quali Robin Beck.
“Heading For The Surface” è ricco di ottime melodie, composizioni mature, eccellente musicalità e una buonissima resa sonora, all’insegna di un Melodic Rock ispirato agli 80’s, ma allo stesso tempo fresco e molto attuale.

Bereits 2011 hatte ich mich mit der Wahl-Spanierin Gabrielle de Val und ihrer Band The Valauseinandergesetzt. Zu der Zeit sezierte ich ihr Back-Album und fand schon damals ihre Textvorträge, die sie mit ihren extrem gut ausgebildeten Stimmbändern ins Gesangsmikro hauchte, echt klasse! Diese Tugend ist ihr natürlich auch nach drei Jahren nicht abhanden gekommen und so steht die Sängerin auch bei ihrem neuesten Werk, "Heading For The Surface", klar im Mittelpunkt.
Bevor die Platte mit dem Titeltrack eröffnet wird, hat die Combo ein ca. einminütiges Intro ins Rennen geschickt. Fortlaufend ist gut zu erkennen, dass - so wie schon beim Vorgängeralbum praktiziert - "Heading For The Surface" recht mainstreamtauglich entwickelt wurde. Warum auch nicht? Insofern gibt es viel Rock mit reichlich Pop-Elementen auf die Lauscher, die fast alle Hit-Qualitäten besitzen, allerdings vorrangig 'nur' die Freunde von Rock Pop der Extraklasse ansprechen dürfte. Extraklasse deswegen, weil die Band absolut stimmig eingespielt wirkt und jeder einzelne Musiker eine tolle musikalische Grundausbildung nachweisen kann.
Mit "Roses And Chains" haben The Val eine erstklassige Ballade entworfen, in der der eingängige Gesang und vor allem Alfonso Samos spektakulärer Gitarrenlauf besonders herausragen. Überhaupt: Wenn Mister Samos seinen Sechssaiter zum Glühen bringt, lässt sich Gabrielle nicht zwei Mal bitten, löst alle Fesseln und präsentiert sich umgehend als wahre Rockröhre. Für meinen Geschmack könnte sie ihrem Songmaterial ruhig etwas mehr Rock- und Blues-Anteile spendieren, denn ich werde das Gefühl nicht los, dass in ihr viel mehr steckt, als 'nur' eine Pop-Rock-Sängerin. Nun gut, es ist natürlich mein persönlicher Wunschgedanke und ist in keiner Weise auf ihre musikalische Qualität zurückzuführen. Nein, Gabrielle kann exzellent singen und jeder ihrer Begleitmusiker wartet, wie bereits oben erwähnt, mit erstklassiger Qualität auf. So lässt die Band keinerlei Schwächen erkennen und hat der Nachwelt ein Album hinterlassen, das eine komplett runde Sache ist und einfach nur 'gute Laune' versprüht.
"Up To Where U Are", "Stardust" und "Wreckage Of My Heart" sind meine Hörprobenempfehlungen. Auch auf die Tatsache gestützt, dass der spanische Edelgitarrist Samos nicht nur eine sehr gefühlvolle Saite anschlägt, sondern mit extrem flinken Finger übers Griffbrett fliegen kann. Diese lassen sich ansatzweise gar mit denen seines Landsmanns und einem Aushängeschild in Sachen Blues Rock Jarvier Vargas vergleichen und so ist er es, der einige Glanzlichter setzt.
Fazit: Ein Reinhören in "Heading For The Surface" halte ich für absolut empfehlenswert. Ob es die Songs sind, der Sound, Gabrielles Gesang oder vor allem Alfonso Samos' Gitarrenzauber, im Prinzip gibt es nichts zu bemängeln. Wenn ich nur mein Gefühl nicht los würde, dass The Val - mit einem glänzend aufgelegten Señor Samos - sich mehr im Genre des Blues Rock versuchen sollte. Aber gut, es gilt hier nicht, meine Wunschgedanken zu berücksichtigen, sondern darum, "Heading For The Surface" zu bewerten. Und hier kann ich ein ganz klares 'gut' ins Zeugnis notieren. Richtig exzellent ist der Band-Service, denn neben der handelsüblichen CD dürfen sich auch die Vinyl-Freaks freuen, da die Tonkonserve auch als LP angeboten wird - Klasse!

THE VAL – Heading for the surface (2014)
Para un open minded musical que lleva unos cuantos años de rodaje, encontrarse con Heading for the Surface es un soplo de aire fresco y un recordatorio de que el rock y la música son grandes, muy grandes. Mucho más de lo que, a veces, queremos hacer que sean.
Gabrielle de Val es, sin duda, la trademark de The Val. Su voz versátil, melódica y personal impregna un disco que tiene de todo. Con la calidad como bandera abre el tema que lleva el nombre del álbum, para dar paso a Wish You All the Best, que comenzará a entroncarte con sus numerosas influencias y a hacerte gozar. Si eres más jovencito, probablemente, tendrás que investigar para descubrir su gusto por Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Chicago…Si acumulas algunas primaveras más, escucharás Roses and Chains y los efluvios del Mike Oldfield más melódico te impregnarán, mientras que Up to Where You Are te dejará claro que The Val no teme acercarse al pop-rock más cercano a bandas como The Corrs, por poner un ejemplo. Sin embargo, es de justicia destacar que la banda, magníficamente diseñada, con Alfonso Samos a las guitarras y producción (excelente en ambos trabajos), Alex Morell al bajo, Tony Ortega a los teclados y Rubén Berengena a la batería, no es una copia revivalista. Sus excelentes composiciones, la maestría instrumental de sus miembros y la voz de Gabrielle, llevan la propuesta mucho más allá y configuran un proyecto que más parece el de una de las grandes bandas foráneas, que llevan décadas en esto, que el segundo trabajo de un grupo madrileño.
El recorrido hacia la superficie del Heading nos lleva a Stardust, balada con toques blues, soul y teclado predominante, que demuestra que Gabrielle nada y bebe en todas las aguas. En todas hace buenas marcas y ninguna le sienta mal. Y lo hace con clase y sin complejos. Por eso, con Wrecking of my Heart, queda claro que, con su segundo trabajo, The Val no van a naufragar, sino todo lo contrario; van a salir a flote y hacernos flotar a todos escuchándolo. Así como, con Borderline, dejan patente que no andan flojos de cabeza y que no hay más fronteras que las de nuestra mente.
Heading for the Surface es un trabajo ecléctico, con clase a raudales y un sonido preciosista. Una obra de madurez, llena de arreglos y con una producción de primer nivel. Si quieres caña a tope, probablemente no te llenará. Si te gustan los menús variados y de calidad, prepárate.

THE VAL - Heading For The Surface (2014)
As happened with many new acts emerged during the recent resurgencein the Melodic Rock world, THE VAL was one of the bands exclusively presented on this blog two years ago on occasion of their debut CD.
The Spanish band now returns with their second effort "Heading ForThe Surface", still retaining the delicate AOR / Melodic Rock melodies but with various steps forward in terms of songwriting, arrangements and production.
The Val's first CD already was a wonderful pack of carefully crafted melodic songs, but now the band has grown on all aspects.
On "Heading For The Surface" the overall sound is more compact, thanks to the toughen of Alfonso Samos' guitars (he is also producer), the rhythm section is tight and Gabrielle de Val's vocals are still angelic, crystal clear, but deeper than never before.
On this new record, The Val sounds more 'European' I'd say, with a British feel. Due the female lead vocals, this brings to mind Romeo's Daughter or Robin Beck but The Val owns a personal, distinctive charm.
There's some real little gems on this records such as the incredibly melodic "Wish You All The Best" or the superlative mid-tempo "She's Dumb And Blind" where the spirit of the '80s emerges in all its splendor. It's a song with an implicit catchines which grabs you at first listen.
The dreamy "Crusaders" adds many keyboards (including piano) to the mix, groovy bass lines and a sparkling guitar work, while "Roses and Chains" is driven by a lovely rhythm adorned with synths.
On the other hand, cuts like "I Saw Him First" offers an updated sound and a song structure that somehow reminds me Harem Scarem, yet strictly Melodic Rock soundwise. "Wreckage of My Heart" follows this path, organic, with a very effective chorus and a modern guitar solo.
Another highlight for me is the ballad "Breathe Me In", not your typical slow tune in this musical genre, much more elaborated, elegantly arranged and showcasing The Val's trademark style. Gabrielle de Val's singing evokes a young Ann Wilson (Heart) here, his vocal progression through the song - from intimate whispers at the beginning to full melodic soul at the end - is first class.
The Val's has delivered a wonderful Melodic Rock record in "Heading For The Surface".
It's rich in terrific melodies, mature compositions, excellent musicianship and a very good production. Guitarist Alfonso Samos is an experienced man with more than twenty years in the business, and his work as 'orchestrator' in the band (he also plays some keyboards) is remarkable.
But the star in The Val is without a doubt Gabrielle. The effect of her vocals on you are like a velvet scarf slipping around your neck... she's great with a tuneful, passionate performance all over the record.
